Maria Sifianou is Professor Emerita of Sociolinguistics at the Department English Language and Literature where she also served twice as Deputy Head (1997–2001 and 2016–2017). She holds a B.A. in Greek and English Language and Literature from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a PGLELT, M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Universities of Edinburgh, Kent (Canterbury) and Reading, respectively. Her publications include the books Politeness Phenomena in England and Greece (Oxford University Press, 1992/1999/2002) and Discourse Analysis (Leader Books, 2001/revised edn Hillside Press, 2006) as well as over seventy articles in international journals and edited volumes. Among others, she has co-edited Themes in Greek Linguistics (Benjamins, 1994), Linguistic Politeness across Boundaries: The Case of Greek and Turkish (Benjamins, 2001) and the special issue Im/Politeness and Globalization (Journal of Pragmatics, Issue 134), which received the 2018 Special Issue Award of the journal. She has served as a reviewer for Oxford University Press, Elsevier, Mouton de Gruyter and numerous academic journals. She is a member of the editorial boards of several international journals, including the Journal of Pragmatics, the Journal of Politeness Research, the Journal of Greek Linguistics and Pragmatics. She is also co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Language Aggression and Conflict (Benjamins) and the Routledge Focus on (Im)politeness book series. Her research focuses on im/politeness phenomena and discourse analysis.
