ATHENA-MARIA APOSTOLOU-PANARA

Before her employment at the Faculty of English Studies, Dr. Apostolou-Panara had taught English language and Literature at various private institutions, and for a brief spell she taught English for Adults at the British Council, Athens.She entered the English Faculty after completing her post-graduate studies at the University College of North Wales (Bangor, U.K.). One of the Senior members of the Faculty, Dr. Apostolou-Panara taught a number of courses among which are the following: English language and Literature, Translation, Introduction to Linguistics, Phonetics and Phonology of English, Psycholinguistics, Contrastive Analysis and Language Change. Of these Contrastive Analysis and Historical Linguistics comprise her basic scientific interests with a focus on the evolution of Modern Greek. During her long career she has written articles on the above subjects and participated in conferences and seminars in Greece and abroad. She served as Finance Coordinator of the Faculty for two years and Director of the Linguistics Department for two years also. She was appointed Supervisor for the Department of English at the University of Athens Centre for Teaching Foreign Languages (Didaskaleio), where she served for a period of three years. During that period she helped in the organization of  the  Ιnternational Congress "Language in a Changing World" (December 2005), serving as Chairperson. She has been a Visiting Scholar at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1974-76), The University of Stanford, USA (1987) and UCL, UK. (1993). She served as member or supervisor in numerous Ph.D. research projects and conducted independent research through the Research Committee of the University of Athens. Her monographs The Phonological Assimilation of English Loanwords into M. Greek (Diss. 1985 in Greek) and Language Change in Modern Greek (1997) are typical of her research interests.
