“Literature isn’t a hiding place. It is a finding place.”
― Jeanette Winterson
Literature Beyond Borders
Literature in English serves as a starting point for exploring ideas, cultures, and societies. We study works from Britain, the United States, and the wider Anglophone world, bringing canonical authors into conversation with voices that have been marginalized historically. Our aim is to understand how literature, including fiction, poetry, and drama, engages with history, politics, identity, and everyday experience in the contemporary world. Courses address topics such as gender, race, sexuality, migration, the environment, technology, racism, multiculturalism, and many others.
From Reading to Interpretation
Works of fiction, poetry, and drama are examined across different historical periods, theoretical perspectives, and cultural contexts. We explore the relationships between texts and seek to draw connections between literary works, ideas, and socio-political developments, approaching literature as a dynamic form of knowledge that evolves alongside the world that produces it.
“Books are a form of political action. Books are knowledge. Books are reflection. Books change your mind.”
― Toni Morrison
Studying in English, Engaging with the World
Teaching, classroom discussion, and coursework are conducted in English. Through this process, students develop not only language proficiency but also the ability to engage with the world from multiple cultural perspectives, while maintaining a meaningful dialogue with Greek society and culture.
“Only connect.”
― E.M. Forster
Knowledge, Research, Creativity
The programme provides a strong academic foundation in Anglophone literature and culture, familiarity with literary and cultural theory, and experience in research, academic writing, and creative expression. At the same time, it fosters critical and analytical thinking, as well as effective communication in multicultural environments, skills that are valuable and necessary across a wide range of academic and professional fields.
Connecting with Society
Knowledge extends beyond the classroom. Through collaborations, public events, research initiatives, and outreach activities, literature becomes a vehicle for dialogue on contemporary social, political, and cultural issues.
“Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination, and of the heart.”
― Salman Rushdie
