EVDOKIA KARAVA

Specialising in the area of Applied Linguistics, Dr Karavas is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is co-coordinator of the Pedagogic and Teaching Competence Programme and scientific coordinator of the Teaching Practice Course and Mentor Education programme. She is assistant Director of the Research Centre for Language Teaching, Testing and Assessment of the University of Athens, which is responsible for the development of the KPG exams (Greek state language proficiency exams) in English.  Within the wider context of the research, evaluation and development work for the KPG, Dr Karavas is responsible for the development and design of speaking module of the KPG exams in English and for the training of oral examiners and markers for the KPG exams. She has been scientific coordinator of a number of nationwide teacher education programmes including the Training programme for primary school EFL teachers (PEAP), the training programme for the pilot implementation of the Integrated Foreign Languages Curriculum, the training programme for trainers of the Advanced B Level ICT Training. A graduate of the Faculty where she currently teaches, Dr Karavas completed her postgraduate studies in the UK in the area of TEFL. She holds a postgraduate degree and a doctorate from the University of Warwick where she specialized in the evaluation of ELT curricula, educational research methods and English language teacher education. She has experience in the evaluation of ELT programmes (in Europe and elsewhere) and in the management of post-service teacher education programmes. For a number of years, she was a lecturer at the Centre for English Language Teacher Education at the University of Warwick where she taught postgraduate courses for EFL teachers around the world. For a number of years she was also tutor for the Hellenic Open University on the MA programme in ELT where she taught the Course design and Evaluation module. She has also coordinated the development of and co-authored material for open and distance learning of the Hellenic Open University.
Dr Karavas is a member of the organizing and scientific committee of the Centre of Excellence for Multilingualism and Language Policy and a representative of the CIVIS consortium in the Department of English Language and Literature of the NKUA. She has taken part in conferences within and outside Greece and her research interests include curriculum/ programme evaluation, EFL didactics, educational research methods, teacher education and development. She has publications in these areas in local and international journals, the most recent being an edited volume (with B. Mitsikopoulou) (2018) Issues and developments in glocal language testing: the case of the Greek National Language Proficiency exams (KPG). London:  Peter Lang Publications.
