Professor Spyros Hoidas holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Athens, a Master’s degree in Linguistics from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a Ph.D. from the University of Athens. He specializes in the cognitive functions underlying human language structures, with emphasis on Greek and English, and the errors that derive from the use of such structures, both intralingually and interlingually. In particular, his research explores how specific language structures instigate weaknesses and difficulty in the processing of languages, which surface as language problems, such as blends, tautologies, confusibles, etc. His recent publications deal with creative aspects of language structures, as well as slips of the tongue and speech errors in first and foreign language production. His broader research interests extend to applied phonetics, language processing by machines and linguistic corpora.
