Eleni Antonopoulou is Professor Emerita of Linguistics and was the Director of the Language and Linguistics Department for two years (1998-2000). She studied in Athens (B.A. Classics), Cambridge and London (Diploma, M.A. and Ph.D. Linguistics). Her main research interests are in the areas of Semantics and Pragmatics, Cognitive Linguistics, Construction Grammar, Translation and Humour. Her publications include the books Agent-defocusing Mechanisms in Spoken English: A Cognitive Explanation of Impersonalization (Athens, Parousia Monograph Series 16, 1991), From the Philosophy of Language to the Philosophy of Linguistics: On Current Theories of Linguistic Meaning (Athens, Parousia Monograph Series 42, 1997), Humour in Interlingual Transference Athens, Parousia Monograph Series 57, 2004), The Sounds of English: Units and Patterns (Potters Bar: JRT Systems, 2004) with S. Pagoni-Tetlow, as well as a number of articles in edited volumes and international journals.
